Asa’s Last Day | New York City Pet Photographer

My neighbor Steve had this gigantic Doberman, Asa, that I would see all the time coming in and out of our building. Every time we bumped into each other, I couldn’t resist hugging this sweet dog. We took photos together on what ended up being his last day.

I have three dogs with rounder, flatter faces that I’m used to taking pictures of, so it was interesting for me as an artist to photograph a dog so full of angles. Also, I worried about getting Asa’s sweet side to show through in photos; he has a face that is so angular, I worried he would look mean. He doesn’t, though, I don’t think. Like humans, you can tell by the eyes that he’s a warm soul.

Ah, buddy. I miss having you as my neighbor.

This makes me supremely sad, but you completely captured his spirit.

Annddd I almost shed a few tears at work. I love the shots but can only imagine the emotions your neighbor was going through while those were being taken. I’ve been in the same situation and… wow. Powerful stuff. Some of those surely should get framed :)

I took a couple of truly crappy shots of my beloved shepherd on the day that she passed and they are a huge treasure for me now. I’m so glad you were able to get these shots.

Steve, my condolences. There’s nothing like losing a dog. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Asa was definitely one of a kind. I’ll admit the first time I met him I was a little scared. But his exuberance wasn’t meanness, it was Asa being happy to meet someone new. Someone that he could sense would let him snuggle and scratch him behind the ears. He was a great pup & I’ll be forever grateful that he was a part of Steve’s life. I’m sad that Steve had to say goodbye but I’m thankful that he got to love Asa while he was here. Sara (Steve’s mom)

You have definitely captured Asa’s spirit in your pictures. Thank you for taking the time to take such beautiful pictures of a beautiful dog.

    Rest in peace “Acey Appleseed”.
