“You mean you want to take wedding photos in Times Square?” I asked.

“No. We want to get married in Times Square.” said Renee.

“Like, IN-in it?” I said, because I am awesome at English.

She did, in fact, mean “in-in” it. And yes, you can get married in Times Square.

Confession: this photographer was skeptical. Would the crowds behave and be respectful? That was my biggest concern. My second concern was the cops. I’m a huge proponent of asking forgiveness over permission, and I knew that a four person gathering – which is technically what this is – doesn’t require a permit, but the thought of a grumpy police officer nixing the ceremony right in the middle of the “I do”s made me nervous.

The officiant – the calm and lovely Judie Guild, who I’ve worked with before – wasn’t worried, though, so we trotted to the middle of Times Square in the middle of a mid-day throng of tourists and New Yorkers, and got them married.

It worked out beautifully. Of course a crowd gathered like I knew they would, and they were respectful. When it was Renee’s turn to say I do, she shouted it, and the hundreds of people that surrounded us burst into applause. There was a second round of cheers for the kissing, and you could feel the love coming out of everyone who formed an organic circle around the middle of two strangers eloping in Times Square. It was definitely an “Only in New York” moment.

These two love birds have been together for sixteen years and live in the deep south of Louisiana, so an over-the-top ceremony in Times Square was just right for them! And they were so fun. After their ceremony, I walked them the few blocks to their hotel, snapping photos along the way, creating the fuss that only a gal in a wedding dress dancing down the street can.

We already have plans to get drinks when they come back for a visit. Clearly, these guys know how to party, and I am happy to have met them.

Every day I am thankful that others fought for me. Had I been born in 1942 instead of 1982, my life would have been very different. Who I am allowed to marry – as well as where I am allowed to eat and shop – would have been determined by the color of my skin and not the content of my character. Yikes.

Of course we all know that 50 years from now, denying people the right to marry who they want is going to be as embarrassing to us as the fact that we once denied the rights of people of different races to get married is now. That one day, two people of the same gender are going to ask for a marriage license and no one is going to think twice about it. That one day, my grandkids are going to laugh when I say “gay marriage”.

“Grandma, we just say ‘marriage’ now. For everyone.”

For everyone. That’ll be a good day.

In the meantime, here are just some of the wonderful same-sex couples I’ve gotten to photograph getting gay married. It is so exciting to have my work defined so clearly by this important time in our history.

If you’re on the fence about this issue, look at these images. They’re not different than wedding photos of heterosexual couples. Flowers and dresses and ties and boutonnieres and rings, sure, but most importantly, they are all brimming with love. Here’s a secret: it isn’t a different kind of love than the sort straight people have. These couples want to cover their spouses with medical insurance, have emergency room visitation rights, and have their children protected just like you do. It seems to clear to me looking at these photos. I hope it gets clear for you, too.

Cheers to love!

Lara and Michelle are two southern nurses who eloped to New York City with me as their sole witness. Aren’t their dresses fantastic? I love how they coordinate even though they are from two different stores.

New York has been wickedly, bitterly cold lately, and on the day they got married the wind was cutting through our jackets. They toughed it out for a few dress-without-coats photos outside before zipping up and snugging together which ended up being a favorite shot. We ducked into a pizza parlor to warm up and figure out a strategy, which turned out to be a good move; we just stayed there, and they celebrated by sharing a cookie shaped like a wedding cake.

I wanted to take individual photos of them, and got a cup of coffee while I mulled over where. It was way too cold and windy to go outdoors and get good photos with any hope of neat and tidy hair. My eyes landed on the colorful case of drink bottles and I was inspired. Bingo! Perfect, colorful, and right by the window.

We don’t always get perfect weather for weddings, but that’s ok. Elopement photography is about telling a story of love. It’s human and it’s real, even when there are challenges, but that’s why I love it.

Plus I get to meet awesome people in love!

Ian and Michelle traveled with their two boys from England to get elope in New York City! I love international clients; they are always so excited to be in the City I often forget to marvel at, and it makes me excited, too! I really enjoyed this family, and their fantastic ring bearers. The youngest was tasked with hanging on to their city hall ceremony ticket; after it was all done he very seriously, very properly handed it to me. I put it in my pocket and thanked him just as solemnly; it felt like the thing to do. Days later I found it doing laundry and it made me smile.

Kids make weddings so joyful and sweet.

Michelle and Ian wanted “charming” New York City photos, so I took them to the Village. The bodega gave us a fun, colorful background, and we found a good cozy pizza place for a snack.

Chris called me on a Thursday night to say he and Julie had decided to get married that Sunday in New York City; they live in Toronto. Last minute plane tickets were booked, Julie told me there was some sort of miracle-working Canadian seamstress that pulled her dress together, and Chris managed to rent a tux.

“Everything is all set, but do you know of anyone who can marry us on such short notice?” he asked.

Actually, I do.

Here’s something about me you didn’t know: I have the power vested in me by the City of New York to marry people. I became ordained in order to help two friends tie the knot last spring, and figure that if I ever show up to photograph a wedding and the officiant gets stuck in a traffic jam, I can, at the very least, help the show go on.

I have an ace team of second shooters I work with when the occasion calls for it, so I called one of them and asked, “Hey, are you free on Sunday? I need you to photograph a ceremony.”

He was, so we got them married.

Amen and amen.

I met Chris at the Hudson Hotel lobby where I took some photos with him first, then headed to their room with my second shooter where Julie was getting ready. I helped her pin her hair clip in and buttoned her into her dress, and then orchestrated their first look in the lobby underneath their giant chandelier. Then all four of us headed to Central Park’s Ladies Pavilion for the ceremony, then to Grand Central for more photos with a quick, COLD stop in Times Square.

Congrats Chris and Julie! It was an honor to help start your new family.

Inna and Ivan are a sweet couple that came to New York City on business; Ivan had to travel all over the US with his business partner getting work done before they headed back home to Russia. A few weeks before, they decided to elope in New York City on Valentines Day.

Honestly, I tried to talk them out that particular date, but it was the only one that worked with their schedules, so we headed to the Manhattan Marriage Bureau on one of their busiest days of the year. It actually wasn’t so bad! The staff, anticipating long lines, had done a lot to prepare for the rush of romantics getting hitched on Valentines Day, and we were in and out in not a lot of time.

Inna wanted to get Starbucks because she the idea of having their names on the cups was romantic to her! After they got married at City Hall, we took a cab to Central Park and took their elopement photos at Bethesda Fountain and the surrounding area. It was their idea to scale the huge rock, and I will admit to being a little bit nervous about it. Thankfully, they did not fall.

Salvatore and Valeria are a fun couple to hang out with, and listening to them talk is so cool: they slip into and out of English and Italian like they are shrugging a comfortable sweater on and off.

A good handful of friends and family came out to celebrate their intimate wedding at City Hall in Manhattan. After the ceremony, I took off alone with the couple to visit the streets in the city where they fell in love years ago. We went to Greenwich Village and took photos by the street signs that marked the location of the home they first shared and even took photos on the stoop of their first apartment together.

We then risked the ire other New Yorkers by heading half-way down the steps of one of NYC’s busiest subway stations. It’s the West 4th – Washington Square station, and was their “home station” when they lived in the City. (If you haven’t lived in New York you might not understand the fondness one gets from one’s “home” subway station. I have a huge soft spot for my little R train station in Park Slope!) Getting this shot was tricky, because I sort of blocked the flow of traffic a little by standing at the top of the stairs. It’s the kind of thing that would have made me shy a year ago, but I’m completely un-intimidated now. Half the people are really excited to see a bride in a wedding dress, and the other half are civil enough to keep their grumpiness at me to a minimum. The photo is worth it! We got the shot in about 30 seconds.

After, we met back up with friends and family at the Bubble Lounge for some toasts and champagne before they headed out to dinner.

What a great intimate wedding! I am so excited I got to share part of the day with this fun couple and their sweet friends and family.

Christian “Chrissi” and Gregory were married in an intimate ceremony in Central Park, officiated by a dear friend on the steps of Bethesda fountain. I arrived at their hotel room a few hours before and snapped a sweet photo of their little daughter trying on her mother’s wedding dress. We took some colorful wedding photos in Times Square, which was fun – New Yorkers usually don’t have fun in Times Square, but Chrissi’s big wedding dress caused a happy fuss that had people melting. We hopped in a party bus and went to Central Park for their wedding ceremony. When the sun went down, we discovered that they light the underside of Bethesda Fountain. These photos remind me Beauty and the Beast! (Gregory, don’t worry – you aren’t the beast!) We got back in the party bus and headed to Grand Central for some more photos – and cheesecake at Juniors!

Congratulations, you two!

Jill and Tiffany were my first photo shoot of the New Year! They had a very intimate wedding in Central Park on the first Saturday in January officiated by Judie Guild. The mid-afternoon setting sun was gorgeous reflecting off of the ice in the pond, and gave a pretty warm glow to the otherwise bleak gray setting of Central Park in the winter. (As did the red wedding dress!)

These two southern brides were great sports about trekking around Central Park for wedding portraits, and so were their friends. My favorite part about intimate weddings is that they are so close-knit. Everyone present forms a community around the couple while they experience an incredible moment. It’s helpful when you want a really stellar group hug, like the one that spontaneously broke out at this wedding immediately post-ceremony, or a bird shits on your wedding dress and you need a quick clean up. (“It’s good luck!” we all said, and thankfully it came right out with a baby wipe.) They tied the knot at the Ladies Pavilion on the west side of the Park, and after the ceremony, an entire box of gorgeous cupcakes got broken out.

Their smallest wedding guest slept through the whole thing, but she woke up from her nap just as we were about to go, so I snapped a sweet family photo with mom and dad. Her teeny hat is so darling.

Kyle and Lindsey traveled from the south to New York City to get married at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau. They were SO much fun to work with. So was their family; Lindsey’s twin sister was game to be my model for the traditional “take a photo of your number” shot that I like to get for people eloping at City Hall.

After their ceremony, we headed to their hotel, Mondrian Hotel in SoHo. It’s fabulous, and I’m going to recommend it to other eloping couples looking for a relaxed, hip place to stay in NYC. The colors were bright and fun, and the staff was helpful in pointing us to places around the hotel we were allowed to take photos. We stopped by their room first to sip champagne, and then wandered around the lobby and two different balconies that overlooked the New York City landscapes. We even found a tractor in the streets of SoHo!

A very, very, very serious conversation was had about whether or not a foot-popping-while-you-kiss photo was “cheesy or sweet”. What do you think? I say any excuse to show off fabulous shoes is a good one.
