Linda, Gabriel and Stella | New York City Family Photographer

Mid-way through this shoot, Stella got hungry. Linda moved to go to the other room, but I stopped her.

“Stay here and let me take photos,” I said. “Just for you. You’ll want to remember this.” Linda was hesitant, but her husband was supportive and encouraging (great guy!) and so she stayed in the living room and let me snap away while Stella ate. The last photo above is Stella right after – babies are so hilarious with how much they loooove milk! That is one really happy little face.

I won’t show those shots here, because they’re personal, but I keep going back to peek at them; they make me tear up and catch my breath every time. I encourage every new mom have photos taken while breastfeeding. They’ll be cherished memories for years to come, even if you only keep them to yourself.

We women are amazing.

Ted, Toni and Ellis – family | Brooklyn Family Photographer

We got together just after Ellis turned 1 for a fun shoot both at home and in the park. Ellis has the best hair, right? I loved photographing him reading with Dad!

C. & J. and New Baby | New York City Family Photographer

“Aw, hey guys. Just chillin’.”

C. and J. hired me to do a maternity shoot with them back in July 2011, and I got to visit them again for a new baby shoot. They made an excellent baby.

p.s. They framed this print from our last shoot and hung it in the nursery. It made me happy.

The D. Family | New York City Newborn Photographer

This tiny girl has dreamy, old soul eyes and two new parents that are so visibly in love with their new daughter. We took photos in their apartment on a day when it was a bit too cold and rainy to go outdoors. The gray clouds outside lent themselves well to a giving this whole shoot a cozy light.

Julie and Sarah | New York City Family Photography

Julie and Sarah wanted to give their folks photos of themselves, so we took to Central Park where these two sisters and I had a fun time running around taking awesome photos (including some wonderfully silly ones!)

The L. Family | Brooklyn Family Photographer

SUCH excellent smiles in this shoot! I have never meet a baby so gregarious. And his sister was a giant goofy ham, which I adored… it got her in trouble a few times!

The S. Family | Brooklyn Family Photographer

This was this little guy’s first time walking like this for such an extended period of time. He was excited to really use his legs, and I was thrilled to capture it! Look how happy and proud he is! (I’ll be he slept well that night.) We had such a good time rolling around in the leaves at the park, and mom and dad were fun to hang out with, too. I have the best job!

The Day Family | Brooklyn Family Photographer

We couldn’t figure out what she wanted in this photo at first. It turned out she wanted to hold her dog! And then she wanted to play with her, so we set them both free in the leaves, and the dog ran laps while little Miss laughed hysterically.

“This is getting out of hand.” said Dad.

“Yes!” I said, “but I like it!”

I really like this photoshoot, not only because of the lovely family (and dog! score!) but because it illustrates beautifully one of my deep-seeded beliefs about portrait photography: it is not necessary to have everyone grinning at the camera in every shot to get lovely, joyful photos. Case in point, this little lady was quite serious in many frames, but it’s still clear she was having a nice time with her parents and her dog in the park on a beautiful fall day. Not that I don’t love a great big belly laugh face, but I will never demand that little kids smile at me. That’s fun for no one. It’s an approach that takes a little faith, but it works, because we have these great shots of her soulful, mildly amused face, and it slays me.

P.S. getting little kids to look at the camera is sometimes a challenge, and then I’ll shamelessly sing or wave a toy in front of my camera to see their face. Everyone with kids in New York City seems to have this beloved Sophie the Giraffe toy, and I was making MYSELF laugh dancing her in front of the lens – and even more so when I got this shot of her.
