Every day I am thankful that others fought for me. Had I been born in 1942 instead of 1982, my life would have been very different. Who I am allowed to marry – as well as where I am allowed to eat and shop – would have been determined by the color of my skin and not the content of my character. Yikes.

Of course we all know that 50 years from now, denying people the right to marry who they want is going to be as embarrassing to us as the fact that we once denied the rights of people of different races to get married is now. That one day, two people of the same gender are going to ask for a marriage license and no one is going to think twice about it. That one day, my grandkids are going to laugh when I say “gay marriage”.

“Grandma, we just say ‘marriage’ now. For everyone.”

For everyone. That’ll be a good day.

In the meantime, here are just some of the wonderful same-sex couples I’ve gotten to photograph getting gay married. It is so exciting to have my work defined so clearly by this important time in our history.

If you’re on the fence about this issue, look at these images. They’re not different than wedding photos of heterosexual couples. Flowers and dresses and ties and boutonnieres and rings, sure, but most importantly, they are all brimming with love. Here’s a secret: it isn’t a different kind of love than the sort straight people have. These couples want to cover their spouses with medical insurance, have emergency room visitation rights, and have their children protected just like you do. It seems to clear to me looking at these photos. I hope it gets clear for you, too.

Cheers to love!

Lara and Michelle are two southern nurses who eloped to New York City with me as their sole witness. Aren’t their dresses fantastic? I love how they coordinate even though they are from two different stores.

New York has been wickedly, bitterly cold lately, and on the day they got married the wind was cutting through our jackets. They toughed it out for a few dress-without-coats photos outside before zipping up and snugging together which ended up being a favorite shot. We ducked into a pizza parlor to warm up and figure out a strategy, which turned out to be a good move; we just stayed there, and they celebrated by sharing a cookie shaped like a wedding cake.

I wanted to take individual photos of them, and got a cup of coffee while I mulled over where. It was way too cold and windy to go outdoors and get good photos with any hope of neat and tidy hair. My eyes landed on the colorful case of drink bottles and I was inspired. Bingo! Perfect, colorful, and right by the window.

We don’t always get perfect weather for weddings, but that’s ok. Elopement photography is about telling a story of love. It’s human and it’s real, even when there are challenges, but that’s why I love it.

Plus I get to meet awesome people in love!

Ian and Michelle traveled with their two boys from England to get elope in New York City! I love international clients; they are always so excited to be in the City I often forget to marvel at, and it makes me excited, too! I really enjoyed this family, and their fantastic ring bearers. The youngest was tasked with hanging on to their city hall ceremony ticket; after it was all done he very seriously, very properly handed it to me. I put it in my pocket and thanked him just as solemnly; it felt like the thing to do. Days later I found it doing laundry and it made me smile.

Kids make weddings so joyful and sweet.

Michelle and Ian wanted “charming” New York City photos, so I took them to the Village. The bodega gave us a fun, colorful background, and we found a good cozy pizza place for a snack.

Christian “Chrissi” and Gregory were married in an intimate ceremony in Central Park, officiated by a dear friend on the steps of Bethesda fountain. I arrived at their hotel room a few hours before and snapped a sweet photo of their little daughter trying on her mother’s wedding dress. We took some colorful wedding photos in Times Square, which was fun – New Yorkers usually don’t have fun in Times Square, but Chrissi’s big wedding dress caused a happy fuss that had people melting. We hopped in a party bus and went to Central Park for their wedding ceremony. When the sun went down, we discovered that they light the underside of Bethesda Fountain. These photos remind me Beauty and the Beast! (Gregory, don’t worry – you aren’t the beast!) We got back in the party bus and headed to Grand Central for some more photos – and cheesecake at Juniors!

Congratulations, you two!

Jill and Tiffany were my first photo shoot of the New Year! They had a very intimate wedding in Central Park on the first Saturday in January officiated by Judie Guild. The mid-afternoon setting sun was gorgeous reflecting off of the ice in the pond, and gave a pretty warm glow to the otherwise bleak gray setting of Central Park in the winter. (As did the red wedding dress!)

These two southern brides were great sports about trekking around Central Park for wedding portraits, and so were their friends. My favorite part about intimate weddings is that they are so close-knit. Everyone present forms a community around the couple while they experience an incredible moment. It’s helpful when you want a really stellar group hug, like the one that spontaneously broke out at this wedding immediately post-ceremony, or a bird shits on your wedding dress and you need a quick clean up. (“It’s good luck!” we all said, and thankfully it came right out with a baby wipe.) They tied the knot at the Ladies Pavilion on the west side of the Park, and after the ceremony, an entire box of gorgeous cupcakes got broken out.

Their smallest wedding guest slept through the whole thing, but she woke up from her nap just as we were about to go, so I snapped a sweet family photo with mom and dad. Her teeny hat is so darling.

I was a surprise.

Rhonda called me on Christmas Eve and asked if I could photograph her elopement at City Hall a few days after Christmas. Luckily I happened to be free on short notice, and Jackie was happily shocked when I showed up with my camera. Being a gift is fun!

The ladies brought three friends to witness.

The hot dog stand portrait was their idea, and I though it was clever; these carts are so iconic, so very “New York City”, and these ladies from Brooklyn taking a photo in front of one made me happy (plus all the colors make it a photographer’s dream).

Congratulations Jackie and Rhonda!

These two tattooed brides traveled from a tiny town in California all the way to New York to elope at the City Clerks Office. Their coordinated purple satin details and matching rainbow heart tattoos make these photos so fun!

After their city hall ceremony and gleeful exit from the City Clerk’s office we headed to the garden right across the street from the Manhattan Marriage Bureau for their portraits, and climbed on the Manhattan courthouse steps for some more post elopement photos on the lovely gray stone. It’s one of my favorite places ever to take photos because the natural light there makes for beautiful portraits.

These two were so much fun to meet; they were sweet, kind, and so excited to be getting married.

Congratulations Chrissi and Jordan!

Mike and Tom had a heart-felt Central Park elopement, thoughtfully and lovingly officiated by Reverend Annie Lawrence. I got to choose the spot for their wedding, and after carefully considering our options around the park, I found a tucked-away nook right by the lake for them to exchange vows. After they were officially married, we took some portraits with Bethesda fountain and on the Mall.

Gwen and Jamie eloped at City Hall in Manhattan with just a dear friend in tow, then met up with me in Dumbo for a fun, “Oh my goodness, we just got married!” portrait session in Brooklyn. They were giddy!

Amber & Wei-En – elopement | New York City Elopement Photographer

Amber and Wei-En were married at Riverside Church in Manhattan in a very tiny wedding. (Everyone in attendance is shown on the steps.) I can’t remember what I said to the “church lady” (shown holding the bouquets in the second photo) to make her laugh like that!
