I'm going to tell you something totally honest: this was not our first engagement session, it was our second. The first was in a park, with their sweet older dog, and while we all loved the dog photos, the rest of them were... not stellar. Maybe worrying about the dog when he wasn't in the photos was throwing us off, and the autumn park, while beautiful, was very expected. This photographer wants stellar, frankly, and unexpected, and authentic and excellent, and... we just didn't get there. They sent me a super honest email, and I said we would do it again.
This is why engagement photos are SO important. We work out the kinks before hand, and then your wedding day portraits, when we're likely in more of a time crunch, are smooth sailing.
In talking about our second shoot as compared to their first one in casual attire, Stephen said to me, "We are bar people".
Oh man. That I can always work with.
They dressed up in cocktail attire this time (Laura, your red dress is perfection) and we went to the lobby bar at the Hotel Americano for a few "signature drink" engagement photos: champagne for her, a Negroni for him. If you look closely at the photo of their drinks on the bar, you can see the tiny imprint of lipstick she left on her glass.
We took a walk next. Usually I nix the Highline for photos, but it was cold enough to be uncrowded, and her bright red dress looked amazing among the grey buildings. Laura's assessment of this shoot was that "this seemed more authentic and comfortable all around."
I can't wait for their wedding next month, coordinated by Allie Beik of Polka Dot Events!
