Akeem and Gemma’s wedding at the Wythe Hotel fell on one of the absolute hottest days in July. They’re used to a bit of an adventure, though! Gemma, originally from Australia, has been white water rafting in New Zealand, couch surfing in Narobi, and on safari in Kenya! Akeem told me he once drove 130 kmph. So crazy temps were nothing for these two.
We braved the heat for a few photos around Williamsburg, getting both quintessential Brooklyn street shots and the iconic Manhattan skyline.
They had their ceremony and cocktail hour on the Garden Terrace - I am obsessed with the black and white tile floor - followed by a dinner reception inside the Main Hall. The Wythe Hotel, like so many cool places in Brooklyn, used to be a factory. In 2014 it was converted to an event space. The brick walls and original wood beams and ceilings were restored, making it a gorgeous venue to host an intimate wedding.
Gemma looked elegant in a gown from Floravere, a wedding dress company I absolutely love. It was started by two women of colour and is backed by Serena Williams. They offer gowns up to a size 26, and have a flagship store here in TriBeCa. You can read their sweet founder story on Forbes, complete with needing to find a place to pump - a story I can definitely relate to these days.
Highlights from the wedding include lovely toasts, a photo booth, and a chic “naked cake”.
